a teacher and parent showing why parent involvement is important

Parents active At DCA Part II: Parent Connect

We are delighted to continue our ongoing Parent Blog Series with a special feature this month. In this edition, we are turning the spotlight on Parent Connect, a parents’ group that has served as a dedicated and valuable partner to DCA for many years.

Throughout this article, we will take a look at the group’s history and highlight the key events and initiatives Parent Connect has spearheaded, providing the finest example of parent involvement in schools, and celebrating the lasting impact they’ve made on our community through their long-standing commitment to partnership.

The Start of a Great Partnership

Well, let’s start from the beginning. Parent Connect started several years ago and was initially run by parents who were also DCA staff and faculty members.

One of its initial activities was holding a prayer group with DCA parents. Both the staff and parents would pray for the school’s students, families, faculty, and staff.

Early on,  Parent Connect also established a parent Facebook group, used to keep parents up-to-date with the goings on of the school, and hosted a plant fundraiser to help beautify the school.

These early initiatives laid the essential groundwork for a partnership that looked to advance the spiritual and physical growth of the campus.

Passing the Torch, Keeping the Mission

Over time, it became difficult for staff to continually lead Parent Connect while also tending to their direct responsibilities to the school and the students.

Following the global pandemic, the group’s capacity dwindled, prompting a need for somebody to ‘pick up the torch’ and keep the group going.

During the 2023–24 school year, parent Jamie Moody answered that call, approaching the DCA administration and offering to take leadership of the group, beginning with managing Teacher Appreciation Week, a responsibility that traditionally fell on the shoulders of the DCA administration.

Supporting Jamie in her role, our own Tracey Burt acts as a liaison between the parents and the DCA staff, initiating both communication and collaboration between the two groups. This year, another DCA parent, April George, stepped up to lead alongside Jamie, as the Moodys welcomed a new addition to their family.

With this new structure and a shared heart for service, the group has built momentum, ensuring that the ‘torch’ stays lit for years to come, and demonstrating a direct correlation between parent involvement and student success.

The Many Things that Parent Connect Brings

Since its revival a few years ago, Parent Connect has graciously taken on more and more tasks, both bettering  DCA and restoring much-needed time and energy to the staff and teachers to better serve in their respective roles.

A few  of the group’s responsibilities include:

  • Teacher Appreciation Week. From thoughtful gifts to notes of appreciation and a special lunch provided to the DCA staff, each May this week is all about saying “thank you” to all the staff and teachers who bless their students and their community.
  • Muffins with a Misses/Donuts with a Dude. This is a fun (and delicious) way to celebrate our students’ favorite men and women in their lives. Each event happens just before the start of a school day and includes coffee, baked goods, apple slices, and themed pictures to remember the occasion.
  • Thanksgiving Baskets. Each year,  as the holiday season approaches, Parent Connect collects donations to put together Thanksgiving baskets for families and faculty in the DCA  community. Together, these parents are turning a season of thanks into a season of giving, one basket at a time.
  • Parents’ Night Out. This new event/fundraiser is happening on April 10. Parents can bring their children from preschool age through 6th grade for four hours of fun while they enjoy a quiet evening to themselves! All money raised from this event will go toward Teacher Appreciation Week. Parents can check their In The Loop emails for details.
  • Support for School Events Such As:
    • The Stag Stampede. Coming up on its third annual event this summer, the Stag Stampede is a fun and friendly competition that serves as a fundraiser for the DCA athletics program. The 5K race takes place on ‘the loop,’ which serves as our infamous training run and a rite of passage for our athletes. Organized by DCA’s advancement team, the event requires parent support and volunteers, and the Parent Connect group has stepped up to help make this event a success.
    • Schoolwide Service Project. Each year, our school participates in a special community service project to thank our neighbors and organizations in the region for their continued kindness and support. This year, we are putting together 30 Jared Boxes to send to Elliot Hospital and making 50 blankets for Project Linus, to be collected in Peterborough. Parents provide vital support throughout the day.
  •

By stepping into these vital roles, the group does more than just complete tasks; it creates an environment where our students, staff, and community can truly flourish.

All Parts of the Body Serve Towards the Same Goal

As we wrap up our Parent Blog Series, we are reminded of the many groups of loving, caring people that support DCA in so many ways.

Similarly, the apostle Paul reminds us that the parts of the body are special in many ways, as we all belong as one in the body of Christ.

“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individual members of one another.”

Romans 12:4-5 (NKJV)
