“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16 (NKJV)
Worshipping Through Expression
Fine Arts at DCA
We worship the Lord in many different ways. When we work hard, strive for excellence, show gratitude, love one another, and forgive when we are wronged, we worship Him through the way we live our lives.
But we also love to worship Him through creative expression!
Here at DCA, the fine arts (specifically music, speech, and drama) are an essential part of our program. Encouraging our students to excel as performers, musicians, and speakers gives them a chance to use their talents while glorifying God. Teaching our students how to personally minister to others is an important part of their fine arts training.
Fine Arts Offerings at Dublin Christian School
Dublin Christian Academy is pleased to offer fine arts programs to give our students a well-rounded education. Each area of study offers students a chance to hone their skills in a way that is honoring to God while teaching them life skills to take with them when they leave DCA and go out into the world.
Music
Music is such an integral part of DCA’s program that all of its students K-12 participate in music class and students in the upper school (grades 7-12) also participate in choir. We believe this is of great importance as the Bible puts great emphasis on music being a part of worship.
For students desiring to further their musical abilities beyond curriculum requirements, we make every effort to accommodate students who are interested in private lessons at the beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels in piano or voice instruction. This year, we also offer guitar and ukulele lessons. The availability of instrumental lessons varies each year.
Along with private lessons, students at DCA have opportunities to join vocal groups, such as the DCA Ministry Team, Men’s Chorus, Ladies’ Chorus, duets, trios, and quartets. Those seeking opportunities as instrumentalists can do so in brass, woodwind, and string performance.
Speech
Students cultivate and utilize their speech skills in various performance contexts. Whether speech competitions, debate clubs, school productions, or speech classes, these experiences provide valuable opportunities for students to nurture personal responsibility, build confidence, demonstrate leadership, and develop poise and interpersonal skills.
DCA requires all students to take a public speaking class at DCA to develop and polish their public speaking skills; seniors may also take drama as an elective to concentrate on the use of speech through drama productions. The demands of participating in major productions and preparing for competitions foster qualities that will serve them well in handling life’s challenges and pressures. Through these experiences, students not only enhance their communication abilities but also learn to thrive under pressure and overcome obstacles.
Drama
We use sketches and plays to convey the message of the Gospel through our drama program. We produce two plays each year: the junior high class puts on a play each year, and the senior production cast by audition. Students who take the Speech 2 class even have a part in directing the junior high play!
Fine Arts for All Ages
As previously mentioned, DCA emphasizes the significance of introducing students of all ages to the fine arts. We actively ensure that this belief is upheld by providing performance opportunities across grade levels. The following are examples of performances we put on each year.
- Grandparent’s Day Concert (Thanksgiving): Each year, just before Thanksgiving, the lower school (K-6) performs especially for their grandparents, which includes music, speech, and drama.
- Christmas Vespers: The entire school (K-12) participates in this very special public performance the day before Christmas break. The early afternoon concert includes choral music with instrumentation, speech, and drama.
- Spring Elementary Program: The lower school puts on a program each April (April 12th this year). It encompasses performance in the forms of music, speech, and drama. This program is open to the public and families but is also geared toward prospective families considering DCA for their children. This program is put on in place of a spring open house for the Academy.
- Spring Concert: This schoolwide show is performed each May, and has become such a large venue that these concerts are sometimes performed outside. Similar to the other programs, this concert is open to the public and encompasses elements of music, speech, and drama.
We love having our entire school participate in programs like these to share their talents with family and friends—and worship the Lord in such a special way.
AACS Fine Arts Competition
Each spring, our upper-school students participate in the Fine Arts Competition that is organized by the AACS (American Association of Christian Schools).
Categories for this competition include music, speech, drama, and art. Students in grades 7 through 12 are assigned to compete in one or more events, so that at some point during their DCA experience, each student will be able to compete in a variety of categories. Students often practice for these competitions during the school day as it is part of the curriculum. Speech 2 students help coach junior high speech contestants.
Fine arts at DCA are as important to our curriculum as all of our other subjects. They teach our students how to practice hard, participate in friendly competition, work together, and most importantly, worship the Lord God in an incredibly awesome way!
If you have any questions about our fine arts programs or the competition, feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to get back to you.
Interested in seeing our fine arts program firsthand?
Please join us on April 25 at 1 pm and April 26 at 6:30 pm to see our high school seniors perform in their rendition of Arsenic & Old Lace. Admission is free but any donations given at the door are greatly appreciated and go toward supporting our fine arts ministry.
