Why DCA Requires School Uniforms
School uniforms. They are a hot topic, not only in private schools but also among a handful of public schools that have adopted their use.
This article will examine the ins and outs of uniform policy, commonly discussed pros and cons of uniforms, and why we at Dublin Christian Academy decided to institute them.
A Brief History of School Uniforms
School uniforms can be traced back to as early as 1222 in England, where the Archbishop of Canterbury required students to wear a cappa clausa, which was a robe-like outfit.
What we may consider the “modern school uniform” can be traced back to the 1500s, also in England. Impoverished or orphaned children who attended Christ’s Hospital boarding school wore a long, blue coat and yellow stockings, much like the clergymen of the time. To this day, the school still requires students to wear a uniform that is very similar to the one it has used for many years, now considered by many to be one of the oldest school uniforms still in use.

Ironically, later on, school uniforms were associated with the English upper class and aristocrats, typically designated for students attending very distinguished schools.
Private and religious schools in the United States began adopting uniforms in the early 20th century. It wasn’t until the 1990s that public schools also followed suit. But even to this day, less than one-fifth of public schools have a uniform policy, with far more schools opting for stricter dress codes instead.
The Pros and Cons of Wearing School Uniforms
The debate surrounding school uniforms is a long-standing one, with compelling arguments for and against their implementation. Let’s take a look at some of the most commonly perceived pros and cons of requiring uniforms in school.

Advantages of School Uniforms:
- Professionalism: When students are dressed for success, they hold themselves to a higher standard as they participate in a professional learning environment. This will also help them prepare for dressing professionally in the workplace later on.
- Student Safety: The safety of students is top priority. When students wear uniforms, they are much easier to identify and are distinguishable from intruders.
- Sense of Community: When all students wear the same attire, a sense of community and shared identity is created, which also promotes school spirit and morale.
- Reduced Dress Code Challenges: Rather than having a complicated and sometimes confusing list of rules regarding a dress code, uniforms remove any guesswork or argument regarding what is and what is not accepted as proper school attire.
Disadvantages of School Uniforms:
- Restriction of Individuals’ Clothing Choices: Perhaps the top argument of opponents is that uniforms limit the ability to express individuality through clothing choices. We’ll cover our take on this in the next section.
- Associated Costs: Uniforms, like any article of clothing, have a cost component. Some may argue that purchasing uniforms may be a hindering expense for families.
- Student Distaste: This is a simple yet valid point. Uniforms may be unpopular in the eyes of some students.
With these uniform pros and cons in mind, we would like to share our perspective on uniforms and why DCA strongly supports their use.
Why DCA Decided to Embrace Uniforms
Before 2008, DCA did not require uniforms but instead had a dress code.
Through the 1990s, clothing had to meet very specific guidelines. For example, girls were required to wear nylons, and at dinnertime, boys had to wear ties. Alumni often reminisce about these earlier days with amusement as they remember the former garb.

As with any dress code, the rules often had to be reevaluated as fashions changed. As guidelines were reviewed and updated, faculty and staff took on the responsibility of enforcing the new rules.
DCA wanted parents, students, and staff to invest their time and energy primarily in learning, fostering relationships, and spiritual practices, minimizing the emphasis on clothing. To accomplish this, a uniform policy was implemented. Although there are pros and cons to wearing uniforms, we found that this policy significantly alleviated the burden on students, parents, and staff, providing practical, simple, and appropriate school attire.
Without the daily worry of what to wear, students can focus on their academics, their classmates, and their faith. Self-expression is displayed through actions and interactions. Also, thanks to a few second-hand options, there are many affordable alternatives for families concerned about uniform costs.
So, how do the students feel about uniforms? Most would agree that they are at least “okay,” or even “pretty chill,” and after a while, they no longer even think about them. The girls appreciate that they can wear skirts or pants, and we allow all students to choose any color polo shirt they wish—a significant difference from the limitations at other schools that offer a little individuality as well. We also allow students to wear school hoodies, a great way to show off their school spirit, enjoy a little more casual clothing, and stay warm on cold winter days.
Keeping the Focus on Christ
Our stance on school uniforms aligns closely with our school’s goals—to love God, love others, and advance the Gospel.
When we’re not concerned about the latest styles or trends meant to set ourselves apart from others, we can direct that attention to where it matters most: Jesus Christ and His gift of salvation. We show others the love of Christ by our actions, not by the clothes we wear.
“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 (NKJV)
